Masafumi Watanabe for Reef // Spring 2017 Collection

MW for Reef // Spring 2017 Collection

Reef is proud to release our third collaborative capsule collection with Masafumi Watanabe: M.W for Reef.

We are very excited to collaborate with Masafumi Watanabe, founder of Bedwin and the Heartbreakers, on our third capsule collection, MW for Reef.

Masafumi is globally respected for paramount quality designs and attention to detail. Each capsule of M.W for Reef is influenced by Masafumi’s idealized version of the surf lifestyle, and designed into timeless looks with his signature detailing and elevated styling.

For this collaboration, Masafumi was inspired by Reef’s heritage in Southern California, and the ‘Just Passing Through’ lifestyle of surfers from San Diego and Malibu in the 1950’s. From the vintage ringer tee to the iconic fig leaf prints, the season’s outfits represent the classic era- simple, clean lines and iconic prints. It’s a blend of Masafumi’s interpretation of vintage California reflected in the styling, and Reef’s commitment to comfort and versatility in the fit and materials.

MW for Reef Spring 2017 collection

Masafumi designed the collection into versatile looks, each with multi-functionality for a surf trip from Baja to Malibu, and aspirational styling for the fashion-conscious consumer inspired by the surf lifestyle. The fig leaf-print button up, representative of modern architecture from the era and tropical in nature, is easily paired with the military-inspired walkshort, built with functional rip-stop fabric, true M.W x Reef form.

The boardshorts include side-seam mesh pockets for versatility, and patina copper grommets with a natural drawcord. Masafumi added a classic ringer tee, an ode to vintage California. His signature detailing carries throughout the line, and the fig-leaf print binds the outfits together from the button up to the boardshorts and rubber sandals. The head-to-toe looks are rounded out with Reef’s new Voyage leather sandal - clean, classic styling and a timeless cork deck. The Beach Casual shoe represents the simplicity of the 1950’s surf era with a wearable canvas upper and subtle, print detailing on the binding. The Mission shoe with Reef Swellular extra traction takes you back to the military influence of San O’ with the green colorway, and the youthful styling that’s representative of the rebellious surfers sneaking down the trail for a beach day.
