2016 Just Passing Through Getaway Contest
Our 2016 JPT contest winners stopped by Southern California to tell us about their amazing experience in Nicaragua.
“This past May, a group of our family and friends made the trip down to Popoyo, Nicaragua in search of waves and a good time. We stayed at Nica Vida surf lodge, where the food was prepped family style and better than anything I've ever had. Fresh doesn't even begin to describe it. We got to disconnect from phones, internet, everything - and just relax in the beachside hammocks.
I took this trip to work on some amateur surf photography, because I definitely wasn't missing out on the hikes to the secret spots. The guys got wave after wave, getting barreled on the regular. It was way different than our normal Florida 2-3 feet waves. The picturesque water and cliffs on the beach made a perfect backdrop.
While relaxing and surfing was amazing, the reason we made this trip was a bit closer to heart. Nicaragua is both the largest and poorest country in Central America. My other half, Joseph, and I began prepping gently used kids board shorts, bikinis, new sandals, and scooters for the children of the impoverished areas.
As our friends and family shared our search for these items, “Boardies for Groms” came about. Our passion project raised over $1000 in two weeks, much of our monetary goal being met by strangers who heard about it online. When getting to give out these items in the villages, we realized this would not be a one-time thing.
Overall, this trip was perfect. Friends, family, waves and humbling opportunities. Thanks Reef for making this possible, stoked for whatever trip is next! “ – Erin Schineller
