Reef is heading to Virginia Beach for one last summer hoorah and to crown the next Miss Reef Girl. Held in conjunction with the East Coast Surfing Championships, the Miss Reef Contest will take place on the Monster Energy Stage, August 28th at 2pm. The winner will take home her share of $2000 in prizes, as well as a trip to Hawaii in November to compete at the Miss Reef Hawaiian Pro.

What does it mean to be a Miss Reef Girl? A Miss Reef title offers the chance to represent Reef through advertising, inclusion in the legendary Miss Reef Calendar as well as appearances at special events around the world. The winner from this event will be flown to the North Shore of Oahu in November to compete in the Miss Reef Hawaiian Pro during the first stop of the Van’s Triple Crown of Surfing.

Once again, Wrightsville Beach served up some fun summertime Atlantic surf, ample sunshine and a packed beach of thousands this past weekend for the 6th Annual Reef/Sweetwater Pro. Hometown hero’s, Michael Powell and Ben Bourgeois, didn’t disappoint either coming in first and second place respectively.

The heat of the day was Semi-Final One where the surf pulsed at its best and 21-year old goofy footer, Michael Powell, put on an impressive display for his hometown crowd. A series of vicious front side snaps and cut back combinations easily moved Powell into the final along with WCT veteran and local legend, Ben Bourgeois.

Semi-final two was a little less productive courtesy of a solid 10 minute lull in the conditions as Heath Walker, Dylan Goodale, Travis Beckman and former Sweetwater Pro Champion, Jeremy Johnston were out in the water anxiously waiting for the next set to roll in. Heath “Nutty” Walker was lucky enough to snag a really good ride in the first minute before the swell deflated and was able to back it up with a score at the end of the heat. Dylan Goodale scored one of the best waves of the day as the clock wound down, ending with a big backside snap to reverse causing the crowd to go wild.

Heading into the final round, it was an absolute packed house on Oceanic Street as the coastal North Carolina crowd showed up in droves to see their two local boys compete against Australian, Heath Walker, and Kauai’s young super star Dylan Goodale. Once the siren sounded to begin the 30-minute heat, it was all Michael Powell, using his local knowledge to rack up points early on. He had been eyeing out this little left hand sand bar up the beach, which proved to be the way to go, causing his fellow finalist to play the catch up game.

Ben Bourgeois came back at the end with a nice left hander where he put on a show for the local crowd executing some very stylish back side snaps and ending on the shore with a big foam climb close out. As the clock ticked down to end the 6th annual Reef Sweetwater Pro it was Michael Powell securing the win over his idol Ben Bourgeois, while Walker and Goodale took 3rd and 4th respectively.

Michael Powell’s gripping hometown performance earned him a handsome reward of $5,000(US) for the win that also puts him in contention for an attempt at the ASP WQS in 2011.

Congratulations to all of the competitors, event organizers and sponsors that helped make this a truly memorable event.

After 6 days of searing surfing action on Halfway Beach, the Reef Bali Pro had to end on a wet note as a rainstorm rolled in on Saturday evening June 26 to give the Miss Reef Bikini finalists, live bands, competitors and spectators a quick cooling off before sending them home from one of the hottest events Kuta Beach has seen in years.

The surfing action began on Tuesday morning with the Women’s Division surfers taking to the water to battle it out for a finals berth, then for the next three days the crowded beach was treated to watching 64 of Indonesia’s top pro surfers going all out to impress the judges in hopes of winning this 6-star Coca-Cola ISC sanctioned contest.

On Friday night the Hard Rock’s Center Stage was packed to the rafters with people checking out the premiere of Cancer to Capricorn and then moving over to the Hard Rock Café to cheer on the 10 Miss Reef Bikini semifinal candidates. It was an amazing evening, so crowded that the entry line trailed out the door and onto the busy Kuta street.

Surprisingly, the remaining surfers found their way to the beach the next morning for the 7:30 am start of the Open Quarterfinals, although Wayan “Betet” Merta did have to be woken up and yanked out of bed, just making it to his heat with a minute to spare.

The crowd built throughout the day as the cheers grew louder and louder with fans rooting for their favorite surfers, culminating in the finals of the Women’s, Masters, and Open Divisions.

In the Women’s final it was Febri (Rohaye) Rahman Ningsih who came all the way from Padang in Sumatra that was victorious, getting her first-ever ISC tour win and a check for Rp 2,500,000.

Made Lapur from Uluwatu took out the Masters Division win in a tightly contested final that saw him exchanging the lead several times with runner up and Kuta Beach local Ketut Wirtawan, but coming out on top in the end.

The highly anticipated Open Division final was a beauty, with last year’s Coca-Cola ISC Champion Lee Wilson up against the younger Raditya Rondi. Both surfers can name Kuta Beach as their first ever surfing experience and are both radically explosive surfers, so it was a great matchup. Rondi took the lead early and seemed to be a wave magnet, steadily racking up higher and higher scores and putting Wilson on the ropes.

But a come-from-behind victory from Wilson was just one wave away, so tension was high throughout the 25 minute final. Unfortunately for Wilson that one perfect wave never appeared, and fortune was with Rondi who was ecstatic, saying, “I have grown up surfing this place with my hero’s like Lee and Pepen, so to be in a final and get a win over a great surfer like Lee is a dream come true. I am so stoked!” He was also stoked to receive a check for Rp 12,500,000 and get 3,000 points in his run for the 2010 ISC Championship.

After the beachside trophy presentation the Reef International pro surfers took to the water to be towed into the waves and deliver an Expression Session demonstration of how to do the most radical maneuvers possible and still live to tell about it. Jay “Bottle” Thompson, Ross Williams, Heath “Nutty” Walker, Nick Rosza, Mike Losness, Paul Fisher, Jack Perry and Adam Bennetts were flying through the air and carving deep gouges in the Kuta Beach waves to the delight of the spectators, then they joined Miss Reef International 2010 Natalia Baccino from Panama to sign posters for the fans that were waiting on the beach.

Then as the sun was beginning to set over the Indian Ocean, MC Tai “Budda” Graham and Rani announced the start of the Miss Reef Bikini final. It was a seemingly impossible task, as the girls were all between a 9 and 10 on a 10 point scale, but the judges finally came to agreement that 21 year old Carolucia “Carol” Octaviana from Jakarta (Number 9) was to be crowned Miss Reef, Running a close second was Bali’s Putu Dhyah Antari and the 3rd winner is Erica Ocampo from USA.

When she was asked how she felt when she heard her named announced as the winner, Carol replied, “I was very surprised. Really happy but really surprised. All the girls are so beautiful and perfect that I really didn’t think I had any chance to win, especially because I’m not as tall as most of them.” How did she get such a great figure? “I swim, do fitness, and go to the spa. Plus I eat very healthy and I don’t smoke,” she said. Then she added, “I’m going to use this experience to share with other Indonesian girls how to live a healthy lifestyle, that you should eat healthy food and do some type of exercise each day.”

Carol received a Kawasaki motorcycle, Rp 10,000,000 in cash, Hard Rock Hotel 2 nights stay Voucher; runner up Putu received Rp. 5,000,000 and 3rd winner Erica received Rp 2,500,000. All of them also received other sunglasses and goodies from Reef and other sponsors.

The surfing awards presentation followed, and then to round out the night as the rain was increasing in intensity but nobody seeming to care, first Bali’s own rock n rollers Superman is Dead took to the stage to everybody jumping, and then the Rockstars from Jakarta.

All in all it was an action-packed and fun-filled 6 days of Reef revelry, with everybody having a great time at Kuta Beach in Bali. Reef’s Senior Marketing Manager for Asia Pacific, Jenn Kong had this to say at the conclusion of the event, “ It was an amazing week of events at the Reef Bali Pro, we’re so happy to support the local surfing community and hope to make the Reef Bali Pro a fixture on the ISC tour for years to come. Bali is the perfect venue to communicate Reef’s surf and exotic beach lifestyle and to premiere Reef’s new movie and to bring back Miss Reef- for the only Miss Reef bikini contest to take place in Asia Pacific for 2010.

The Reef Bali Pro 2010 was sponsored by Reef Indonesia, Kawasaki, the Hard Rock Hotel and Center Stage, the Hard Rock Café, Hard Rock Radio, Coca-Cola Amatil Indonesia, Heineken, Optik Seis, Waterbom Bali, FHM Indonesia, Surf Time Magazine, Lines Magazine, and sanctioned by the Coca-Cola Indonesian Surfing Championship Tour.

We have just come off a super sick US tour with international stops of Australia and Panama, so to finish it up in a killer destination like Bali that’s holds the world’s best surf is like icing on the cake,” said Jay “Bottle” Thompson. “Bali…. the Reef Team is coming and we can’t wait!”
And no Reef event would ever be considered without a Miss Reef competition, so immediately following the Cancer to Capricorn movie premiere the evening’s fun will continue at the Hard Rock Café with the Miss Reef Bikini Contest semifinals. The finest of the fine will line up to show off their best assets in hopes of winning a spot in the final that will take place at the huge party on Kuta Beach on Saturday the 26th, and ultimately being crowned Miss Reef.

The grand finale will go off on the sands of Halfway Beach in Kuta Saturday afternoon at 3 pm, beginning with a final expression session by the Reef International team riders showing off their most radical and explosive surfing. The Miss Reef Bikini final will follow, with the winner receiving Rp 10,000,000 (USD 1, 100), a Kawasaki motorcycle, Tom Ford sunglasses, two nights stay at the Hard Rock, and Reef goodies. The runner up will get Rp 5,000,000 (USD 550), Fendi sunglasses and Reef goodies, and the crowd favorite will come home with Rp 2,500,000 (USD 225), Calvin Klein sunglasses and Reef goodies.

Finally, the Reef Bali Pro finalists will take to the stage for their awards presentation and to accept their trophies and cash, after which the exciting lineup of live music by RockStars (a collaboration band from Jakarta which consists of Andi /rif, Aryo –Dance Company, Ovy /rif, Bondan Prakoso, Enno –netral, Beng-beng –Pas Band) and Bali’s own superstars Superman is Dead will rock the crowd at Kuta Beach far into the night.

Reef Indonesia Manager Wiwin Hutson is very excited about this year’s event, stating “It’s been five years since the last Reef surf competition and Miss Reef contest, and people kept asking when we would do it again. This year with the Cancer to Capricorn release and the great support of our sponsors, everything came together just perfect to make it happen.”

“It’s going to be a very memorable event, and we couldn’t be happier doing it right here at Kuta Beach,” she added.

Admission to movie premiere and after party at Halfway Kuta Beach is free, so plan on spending a few days at the beach and at the Hard Rock Hotel in Bali to check out the red-hot and action packed Reef Bali Pro 2010.

You can also follow the action on Facebook via Reef Indonesia and Indonesian Surfing Championship, and on the Coca-Cola ISC Tour minisite at www.isctour.com .

The Reef Bali Pro 2010 is sponsored by Reef Indonesia, Kawasaki, the Hard Rock Hotel and Centerstage, the Hard Rock Café, Hard Rock Radio, Coca-Cola Amatil Indonesia, Heineken, Optik Seis, Waterbom Bali, FHM, Surf Time Magazine, Lines Magazine, and sanctioned by the Coca-Cola Indonesian Surfing Championship Tour.

Being part of the Newport Beach Film Festival, Reef obviously knows how to throw a party. The entire Reef team was on hand (including Alana Blanchard, Rob Machado, Ross Williams, Tonino Benson, Stephen Koehne, Sean Moody, Ben Bourgeois, Nick Rozsa, Chris Waring and Brazil’s Thiago Camarao), FUEL TV was doing their blue carpet gig (and even gave the infamous Paul Fisher a microphone), and a huge rager went down afterwards (sorry, no cameras were allowed). Oh, almost forgot to mention that the Reef Girls were also on hand showing off their stuff and making every guy drool. All-in-all a good night to have been in Newport.

There will be a further US tour for the Reef film “Cancer to Capricorn” which will tour Texas, Virginia Beach, Florida, Puerto Rico, Santa Cruz, Hawaii and will end up in San Diego for the final stop. Dates for the tour will be from May 9th to 21st. Hawaii’s premiere will be a little later on June 5th along with Santa Cruz premiering on June 12th. Reef team riders Jay “Bottle” Thompson, Ben Bourgeois, Paul Fisher, Mike Losness and Hawaii’s Stephen Koehne will be traveling the US promoting the film. Be sure to check the listings on Reef.com or www.reef.com/cancertocapricorn.com to see to nearest showing close to your town.

Dylan Goodale woke up on his nineteenth birthday in the state of California awaiting a quarterfinals match-up with elders Asher Nolan, Teddy Navarro, and Anthony Petruso. A distinct difference from his shores of Kauai—shores which lie past the Island of Catalina, which was clear as a bell this Sunday in Huntington Beach for the final day of the Vans Pier Classic.

The dirty-blonde Kauai regularfoot came out swinging for the fences from the start of the event. When others were conservatively putting their boards on rail for safe turns, Goodale was trouncing them by consistently sticking blow-tails and air reverses with a determination. “My main focus was the Pro Junior event,” Dylan said. “So in the ‘QS event I was just trying to get as far as I could and have fun.”

On Saturday Dylan had lost out in the Ezekiel Pro Junior, leaving his focus solely on the ‘QS side of things. “After that I just thought ‘go big,’ that’s what the judges were rewarding,” Dylan remarked. And go big he did—from the Round of 64 on he won every single heat he surfed in the ‘QS event. Not an easy feat for anyone, let alone a kid trying to get his seeding on the map in the Pro Junior Series.

Another kid who went big this weekend was San Clemente’s Kolohe Andino in the Ezekiel Pro Junior event. In his three heats on Sunday he didn’t have a total heat score under 16.40. He continually posted 8’s and above with his knifey carves, clean air reverses, and speedy snaps. The capper for Andino came in the bar-raising final against Andrew Doheny, Tyler Newton, and newly signed Reef footwear rider Luke Davis.

Reef’s Luke Davis had started the heat off like a madman, and though it was still early, it appeared to be his to lose. Kolohe answered back on an ankle high wave with as clean of an air reverse one could ever pull, racking in an 8.65, and then following it up with a 7.25 to take the lead. Luke sounded right back though with his own air reverse, more elevated and with more speed, but it only garnered an 8.40.

Luke sounded right back though with his own air reverse, more elevated and with more speed, but it only garnered an 8.40.Doheny also got into the mix with the highest score of the final: a 9.5 in which he threw three full-rail turns, the most powerful turns of the final. With Kolohe looking for a score to steal the lead back from Luke he paddled towards Machado’s peak and roped one in. He started with another lightning quick air reverse on the outside (stuck cleanly), and check turned his way to the inside reform where he unloaded another flawless air 3 followed by a fist pump of gratification. The score came in at 9.3 and gave Kolohe his first ASP Pro Junior victory. “It feels good to get that monkey off my back,” he stated.

Goodale also dropped the monkey that has been on his back the last four years, this being his first win since he was fifteen. But it didn’t come easy for him in the final against seasoned veterans Micah Byrne, Peter Mel, and Jason ‘Ratboy’ Collins. Though Dylan jumped out to a quick lead racking in a 7.75 with one big air reverse, local HB boy and 2007 Vans Pier Classic champ Micah Byrne put up the biggest score of the entire event with three distinct power turns and a blast of the end section for a 9.65.Goodale also dropped the monkey that has been on his back the last four years, this being his first win since he was fifteen.
Around the 10-minute mark Dylan Goodale got his opportunity to take the lead back though. He started off with two smooth snaps and capped it with quite possibly the biggest air reverse of the entire event. The result: an 8.55 and a snatching of the lead from HB local boy MB. With two minutes left and no waves of high scoring value having come in since Dylan’s 8.55, the Kauai camp in the competitors’ area began stirring. As the hooter sounded the Smith brothers (Alex and Koa) met their island brother at the water’s edge and carted him to his rightful spot on the podium.

I (Nutty) talked to Dylan just after his quarterfinal and I could see his level was really solid and his confidence was sky high. I told him to work on a win and remember that is why he is there and there too win. He agreed in a very humble way and just said in his little dude voice “”Uncle Nut I’m on it””.I (Nutty) talked to Dylan just after his quarterfinal and I could see his level was really solid and his confidence was sky high. The Reef team has owned the Van’s Pier Pro for the last two years now with Mike Losness taking the title in 2009. Lets hope we can keep the momentum going for the up coming US Open in July.

Once again well done Dylan from all the crew at Reef.Props to the killer crew from TransworldSurf for covering this event and all the sick images from legend photographer Jack English.
