Bobby Martinez defended his title at the Billabong Pro Mundaka over the weekend becoming the first surfer to win back-to back victories at the Euskadi, Spain based ASR World Tour event. The Mundaka win propels Reef team rider, Martinez up seven spots in the ASP World Tour ratings to 6th place.

“I had a dream that I won the event about a week ago,” Martinez said. “I didn’t even tell my fiancé Cleo, but I didn’t want to wake up from the dream. It felt so real and now it has come true. It’s good to win an event wherever it is, but winning here last year and then winning here now… it brings back so many great memories.”

The semi-finals mixed Martinez in the title race with Mick Fanning, Taj Burrow and Kelly Slater, all looking to shore up their points for the championship. A lack of swell and poor wave selection knocked Slater and Fanning out setting up an electric final heat between No. 3 Burrow and Martinez, while extending the 2007 title race.

In similar conditions to last year's event Martinez stood out in the fast peeling two to three-foot lefthanders. Bobby started off with a 6.33 and then backed it up with an 8.17. Halfway through the final Martinez looked to have the win locked up, but Burrow found himself in the right spot to execute a series of powerful, backside snaps.

Martinez overtook Burrow with his forte, frontside, off the top snaps and open faced hacks, which were rewarded with an 8.27. When time ran out Martinez found himself in the Mundaka history books as the only surfer to win the event two years in a row.

“Bobby’s victory here in Mundaka puts him back in the winner’s circle as he moves into the last two events Brazil and Pipeline with the utmost confidence to finish the year top five again,” said Heath Walker, Reef Global Athlete Manager.

By overtaking third place Burrow in the finals, Martinez ensured that Reef footwear rider, Fanning remains in first place going into the next WCT event in Brazil.
