FANNING VICTORIOUS ON THE GOLD COAST
07
MAR
2007
After finishing the 2006 WCT in 3rd place, an elated Mick Fanning kicked off the 2007 season with a huge win at his home break in the Quiksilver Pro, the first event of the World Championship Tour. Fanning has now claimed two victories at Snapper Rocks. His first was in 2005, a comeback performance following a near-career ending hamstring injury. Fanning was clearly one of the form surfers of the event, posting a 19.53 (out of 20) in the quarters against rookie sensation Josh Kerr, & an 18.13 against 2006 finalist Taj Burrow. His '07 victory, a dominating performance against an on -fire Bede Durbidge, was celebrated by the nearly 10,000 fans that cheered on both local favorites. The 'Cooly' kid was in peak form, surfing in nearly perfect 5-6 foot barrels, scoring a 16.17 versus Bede's 12.00. The win sets the pace for the rest of the season, and launches Fanning into early title contention.

When asked about the victory, Fanning commented, "I think this second win at Snapper is a little bit different. Last time I was in this position (on top of the ratings after the first event), I had just come back from a big injury & it was a huge relief but this year I’m more focused and I really believe that I can take the world title. Plus I’m just enjoying it a lot more.”
