For the first time in history, legendary Barbadosī Soup Bowl waves will stage the biggest Latin American Surfing Tour event, the Reef Classic Latin Pro Barbados. It all takes place on the tropical paradise setting of Barbados from the November 3-5, 2006.
The best surfers from: Argentina, Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Venezuela, Uruguay, Costa Rica, Panama, Mexico, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, United States and of course the Barbadosī locals are going to fight for the 10.000 dollars in cash prizes and decisive 4.000 points for the ALAS final ranking.
This event will continue the traditional Reef Bowl International Surfing Classic, that from this year and on, will be part of the Latin Tour. ALAS President, Antonio Sotillo, commented: "Itīs such a great thing, clearly is the beginning of our opening to the English-speaking Caribbean, to countries like Jamaica and Trinidad Tobago, that also have the right to be a part of Tour like the ours, that is going to give competition skills and a way of living to all the surfers that live in that part of the globe. So, this is a great opportunity of union by the commitment for a better surfing future on the region and the great chance of training in a high quality wave.
Soup Bowl Soup Bowl is a legendary reef break, that forms perfect hollow rights from two to ten feet, eigth time World Champion, Kelly Slater, pointed the wave as one of the 10-best right breaking points on the entire planet. "The Bowl" breaks at it best only a few days a year, but is good to know that this happen more often in the norther hemisphere winter, that will be starting on the contest date. However, following the locals words, 300 days a year, waves are overhead.
Barbados island is located 250 miles northeast from of Venezuela. It has a long surfing tradition. On 1965, Californians, Johnny Fain and Butch Linden introducted surfing on Barbados. After enjoying it waves, their boards were left behind and used by the natives. David Allen, Scaul Worme and the Knowls brothers, Val and Allen were some of the first surfers.
Twenty years after, a group of professionals leaded by Soup Bowl local, Mark Holder took the Barbados flag to competitions around the world.
From November the 3rd until the 5th Barbadosī Soup Bowl will be the surfing capital of Latin America and the Caribbean. The best surfers from our continent will fight in one of our best waves, for the victory of the sixth stage of the Latin American Pro Surfing Tour.
