REEF Inspirational Design: Bella Costas
Who doesn’t love springtime? Winter has worn out its welcome and we all start thinking about longer evening surf sessions, storing our winter threads, and warmer days on the horizon. The Reef family is big on springtime and we are especially excited to unveil our new Spring Bella Costas.
We sat down with Brianna, our fashion-minded Lead designer, to hear what she draws from when approaching a project like the Bella Costas.
Where does your inspiration come from when you are designing?
I get a lot of my design inspiration from travel. Reef's exotic heritage is such a great base from which to gather inspiration when coming up with a new style, trend, or collection. I generally plan each season's trend off of a new location, really emphasizing how we believe that the Reef consumer is a part of a global tribe, a free-spirit who enjoys travel, beauty and exploration.
What's in store for the Spring Bella Costas Line? What's different this year from last?
We have a lot of new materials in our "We Heart" collection, emphasizing global sustainable development, including some Guatemalan crochet and African batik fabrics. And of course we brought in some new Guatemalan woven textiles, a material that our customer has really connected with from our first Bella Costas season.
We also are pushing the limits of our Bella Costa line - taking it to a new level with our Bella Costas Del Sur, using leathers, suede, and premium craftsmanship with the same amazing Bella Costa comfort.
What is your favorite new shoe in the Line and how would you style your look around it?
My favorite new style in the Spring 2013 line is the "Reef Bochica" because it is a basic pointed-toe silhouette in interesting fabrics. It’s easy to dress-up with a cute dress or dress-down with leggings or cropped jeans.
Who are some of your fashion inspirations?
I love the beachy edginess of Oracle Fox, the bohemian vibe of Nicole Richie/House of Harlow, the global vintage look of Anthropologie and Free People, the simple toughness of All Saints and Rag and Bone, among a host of other inspiring brands and people.
How would you describe your personal style?
My personal style is kind of bohemian and eclectic, some days more vintage and feminine and some days with a little edge. I'm less about trends and more about what I feel good in and what stands out. Just like Reef, I gather a lot of my style and pieces from my travels around the world.
What are some big trends you see coming for Spring 2013?
Our big trend for this season is "Island Gypsy.” To get this vibe, we used a lot of bright colors and tropical materials. We have a new batik fabric in our "We Heart" collection, further trying to build sustainable communities around the world through their traditional handicrafts.
We are introducing a few new pointed-toe styles, as well as bringing back an espadrille slip-on. Woven and huarache looks are still important, as they really portray our Latin roots.
Who do you design the Bella Costas for?
I design the Bella Costas collection for the girl who wants to look cute but also needs to be comfortable throughout her busy day. She appreciates interesting details, quality construction, and the exotic vibe that shows in our brand and our shoes.
